Unit 8 Why don’t you get her a scarf ?


Aims :1. To practise the dialogues on comparing qualities.
   2. To have the class learn the target language by heart .
Teaching methods : Cooperation, the Communicative Approach

-Why don’t you get her a scarf?
-That’s too personal. / That’s not interesting enough .

Teaching steps
Step One : 
1.Warm-up  Duty report
2.Lead-in  
(1)T: Have you ever received any gifts on your birthday ?
  What kind of gifts have you got ?
S1: I’ve got a bicycle from my father on my birthday .
S2: My friend gave me a toy robot.
S3: ….
Learn the key words: gift, scarf, CD, bicycle , calendar, photo album
(2) T: My friend’s birthday is coming . What should I get her for her birthday ?
   S1 : Maybe you can get her a scarf .
 T: No, that’s too personal .
 S2: What about a card ?
 T: That’s boring . What are other gifts can you think of ? Maybe we can get some suggestions from the dialogues .
 Write down the new words on the blackboard : personal; special; creative; boring; expensive.
Step Two : Listening
1. Listen to the tape and finish 2a.
2. Listen again and finish 2b.
3.  Check the answers 
Step Three : Pairwork 
1. Read the instructions . Point out the possible gifts and comments in Activities 2a and 2b.
2. Ask two students to act out the dialogues
3. Ask students to work with their partners  Talk about someone who is having a birthday soon. Talk about what gift you should or shouldn’t get for him / her using the key words on the blackboard and the sentences in Grammar Focus. 
Step Four : Grammar focus: Review the grammar box. .Ask the students to say the statements and responses.
 Step Five : Revise the key sentences: Self Check: Turn into English
——我妈妈的生日快到了。我买什么给她呢？
——你为什么不买条围巾呢？
——不，那太个性化了。
——那么给她一本相册怎么样？
——听起来真不错。
Step Six: Homework 
1. Finish the exercises in workbook, Section A
Revise the points in Section A. Try to remember the key words and sentences.
